5.
Mel waited for something else to happen, but nothing did. She had resigned herself to never knowing the truth about the deaths. She decided not to attend Dariusâs funeral, she had barely known him after all.
One Saturday about three weeks after her chat with Helen, Mel was leaving to get a coffee when she ran into someone letting themselves into Juliaâs apartment.
âUm, hello, can I help you?â Mel said, approaching the man standing in front of apartment 307.
âIâm Tony, Juliaâs nephew. The family has asked me to start sorting out her estate. And you are?â
âMel, I live in 304, obviously.â Melâs cheeks started to heat, of course she lived there, sheâd just left it. âItâs nice youâre doing that for the family. Did you, uh, get a briefing on the state of things?â
Tony frowned. He was in his late forties, a little bit on the tubby side, with broad shoulders and a bulky frame, solid and strong. His button down blue and white checked shirt was straining a little around the tummy, perhaps put on a little weight recently. Below the shirt, he wore dark blue jeans and leather sandals reminiscent of a Roman gladiator with their multitude of straps. âThe state of things?â
âThereâs umm, mud all over the interior.â
âMud? Why on earth is there mud? How do you know?â His frown deepened.
âI found her body.â Mel swallowed; her mouth suddenly dry as the image of Juliaâs body flashed through her mind.
âI had no idea. Iâm sorry you had to find her like that.â
There was a lengthy pause in which neither of them said anything more.
âDo you think youâll need a hand? I can help out a little,â Mel said.
âNo, thatâs probably not necessary.â Tony waved his hand at the idea.
âIf you change your mind, Iâm just across the way here.â Mel paused. âIâm going for a coffee; do you want me to bring you anything back?â
âIâm fine, really. Itâs kind of you to offer. Iâd better get cracking, especially if thereâs cleaning that I wasnât warned about that needs to be done first.â
âIâm sorry for your loss. Julia was a lovely person.â
Tony looked down for a moment, before looking back to her. âShe was.â
âHave a good day.â
âYou too.â
Mel lingered as he pushed open the door and stepped into the empty apartment. The smell of wet, rotting earth had mostly dissipated and Mel was surprised to find herself relieved not to smell that again.
